Angelman Syndrome
(Angelman Syndrome)
It is a rare syndrome involving a gene mutation and deletion on chromosome 15. The global incidence is about 1:15,000. There have been about 50 cases tested by the Hong Kong Department of Health so far. It is a very rare genetic disease. All the little angels have severe developmental delays, and after evaluation, they are mostly classified as moderate to severe mental retardation. Their language expression is quite low, and they can only use eye contact, nodding and smiling, or a few movements when they are older. Their balance is poor, and some are even unable to walk. They are often very happy and easily excited, and have sleeping disorders, which puts a lot of mental pressure on their parents. What bothers parents the most is the symptoms of epilepsy. About 80% of the little angels will have different types of epilepsy symptoms, which is what parents are most concerned about, because it will affect their learning and development, and it can happen anytime and anywhere, threatening their lives, so they need to be carefully watched and cared for around the clock!

Today (15/2) is the annual International Angelman Syndrome Day(IAD). It coincides with the Lunar New Year, We have a New Year group worship for celebrating this significant day for Angelman.
Our angel family responded to the tradition of IAD, put on blue shirts, watched movie at theater, gathering together, and had an Angelman Walk!
We had a great day with our local Hong Kong Angelman community organised by HKASF!
To date, there are a number of clinical trials for AS with more in the pipeline. I believe there will be a treatment for AS one day to improve the lives of our Angels, but we need funding for this vital (and expensive) research.

To celebrate the 180th Anniversary of Marine Region of the Hong Kong Police, “180 years: Safeguarding
HK Waters - Community Engagement and Charity Day” will be held at Marine Regional Headquarters
(MHQ) on Saturday the 19th of November. To get things started on the morning of the event the Marine
Police Dragon Boat Team will hold the “Dragon Boat Cross Harbour Charity Parade” which will see the
team and members of uniformed groups paddle Dragon Boats 8km from Kowloon Public Pier, the pier
formerly used when Marine Headquarters was in Tsim Sha Tsui to its current headquarters in Sai Wan Ho.
On arriving at MHQ the weary paddlers will be met by members of various community groups who will be
participating in various 180A commemorative activities all of which will serve to recognize Marine Region's
partnership with the community and how it plays a key role in safeguarding Hong Kong waters.

Organized by the "Rare Disease Student Volunteer Service Team of the Chinese University of Hong Kong", 17 groups with a total of 68 tertiary students from the School of Medicine or the School of Social Sciences were recruited to write and publish a collection of autobiographical life stories for patients - "Looking for Four Leaves" "Grass - Life Stories of Seventeen Rare Patients", which took more than 11 months to finally be completed.
A new book launch conference was held recently (27/8).
"Looking for Four-Leaf Clover" tells the life stories of 17 rare patients and their families. Chloe's family was fortunate to be invited to participate in it, and HKASF also fully supported it as a supporting organization.

Caring Mask Phase 2 successfully finished under the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 200 boxes and 12,000 pieces of face mask is distributed. We apologized for our arrangement if you feel confused and thanks for your patience.
HKASF continued to put every disabled-families in heart. Although the supply of mask become stable, unfortunately everyone cannot be relaxed due to the pandemic. In the meantime, when the citizens seek resources non-stop to defend virus, disabled-families could not do the same because of the high cost and caring problem. So disabled-families cannot catch up with the trend. HKASF aims to solve the obstacle through the distribution campaign.

HKASF would like to appreciate our volunteers with everyone's "Like". In the entire campaign, we did almost nothing but only a phone call and acknowledgement to receive their unconditional support. We are work is not going to "be the first to show concern and the last to enjoy oneself". But we sill try our best to find different resources to help everyone overcome the pandemic.
COVID-19 is spreading out all over the world. Also, Hong Kong has several cases and appearing the seriousness. HKASF notice everyone should reduce outdoor activities to protect yourselves, and also your family and other citizen. Furthermore, this is a responsibility of every citizen.
At the same time, the shortage of surgical masks makes many citizens feel helpless. We are upset to see some of citizen line up to purchase in bad weather.
The shortage and the inflation of surgical masks bounder the minorities to fulfil their needs. We wish you all be calm and believe the supply will be normal soon. However, the disabled-person and their families always left behind. After this few weeks, we built up a relations with our partners of previous events to help those disabled-families on time. The most important is mentally assistance is more difficult to handle than physical.
"One Click Care" Platform aims to serve disabilities, People with Special Needs and their families including Rare Diseases patients. After a long discussion, we successfully purchase 1000 boxes (50,000 pieces) of masks and distribute to One Click Care member for free.

A Pandemic makes us scared, a mask make us anxious.
For us, it is a promise to help everyone fight with the virus. To be frank, HKASF do not know how difficult it is and underestimate the possibility. We spent one month to operate the entire process including those difficulties and problems. It is complicated to tell how harsh we had faced as well.
With this unbeatable spirit, we finally purchase this batch of masks from Brazil and will distribute via One Click Care Platform to over 300 members.
Besides, we are not only give our assistant to One Click Care member. In the meantime, HKASF distribute almost 32,000 piece of masks to Special School, Hostel for Disabilities, Sheltered workshop and other service organizations. The beneficiaries are below,

Mid-Autumn Festival is an opportunity to have gathering with families and friends. HKASF has no reason not to have a party with our AS families.
Other than delicious food and fruits, Mooncake which made by Mrs. Tong (AS Patients' Parent) is also our "Must" of our annual Mid-Autumn Festival party. Although the gameplay of our booth was quite simple, the game can be used to train the coordinating ability of our little angels' hands and eyes, so that they can eat in their daily lives with their own tableware.
At the same time, HKASF also seized the opportunity to introduce and distribute "Caring Tickets" to the SEN parents to encourage families with special needs to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the happy hours at the cinemas.
We are putting in more resources into the community actively. It is our hope to learn and cooperate with different patient groups, SEN or social welfare organizations, and work together for social communion and create a new milestone for all of us.
During the Easter holiday, we prepared a whole bunch series of activities for the little angels. This time we would like to thank Kenneth for the Concatenation and arrangement. With the help of the instructor Karmen, we have recently held a very funny and joyful workshop "Little Angel Palm Painting Activity" at the Little Angel Resource Center.
It is due to the ability that our little angels are hard to paint pictures like other children, but as long as they spend a little thought, they can show their talents as well. We used hands instead of brushes to draw different types of animals on the paper. Their finished products were really good!

The most interesting activity is the 3 legged race. It is like an experience more than a race. The experience brought us what the Rett families suffer with. We understand what they feel, because some of the symptoms of Angelman Syndrome are similar with Rett Syndrome. However, non-disabled-person is hard to understand there are still many problem we have to solve. So, We believe that the most positive way is being optimistic. At the same time, we still need your caring and love as well.
Founder of HKRETT said that they wish to organize this event every year in order to promotion Rett Syndrome. Hey! Everybody, let's go together.
In response to the International Angelman Day on February 15th, HKASF held a fun day at Tamar Park on February 16th and ended perfectly with joy under bright sunshine.

Christmas season, celebration time!
The annual Little Angel Christmas Carnival continued to send laughter, joy and blessings to the families of the little angels.
This year's Christmas Carnival, for the first time, was held in our Little Angel Resource Center, a place belonging to the Angel Families. We played from two in the afternoon to ten in the evening. The food, gifts and games were uninterrupted, and the laughter was loud resounding through the clouds!
Thank you for the devoted arrangement by the Committee members and the great support from the angel families . Wish everyone a joyful Christmas and a happy new year!

HKASF and 121 Committee believe that Rare Disease Family and disability also have the rights
After 3 months preparation, 121 Expo, the first Rare Decease Expo in Hong Kong will be held on 1st December in KITEC, Kowloon Bay by Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation and led by the convenors of One Click Care, the the Founder of HKASF, Mr Joson Chan, LegCo member, Dr. the Hon Fernando Cheung, and the Founder of Beyond Foundation, Ms Margaret Chung.
At the beginning, HKASF have no allowance but a good planning and spirit. After 6-month promotion period, our drama will come true. Now, with the support from various friends and partners, framework of 121 expo is constructed so that we step into the final stage of preparation.

The Expo aims to gather Rare Disease families and to promote Rare Diseases to the public. The expo opens for public without fee.
In the other hand, the event consist of Information, Education, Counselling, Food and Beverage and entertainment. HKASF hope that this Expo could become a leisure event with "to Play", "to Eat", "to Learn" and "to Watch".
"121 Along with Love" means caring Rare Diseases with Love and be with Rare Disease Patient and their families. We hope to gather the stakeholder from different circus in order to promote the awareness of this issue.
"121 Expo" received the government response that the Chief Executive, Ms Carrie Lam with attend as Main Guest to show her support. Besides, various departments of Government and Rare Disease-related organizations, and other important person from medical and social service sector deliver their support and and even participate in the event. Furthermore, HKASF has also invited schools as performing guest and NGO and Rare Disease-related Groups to set up a booth for exhibition.

Through the "OneClickCare" project, HKASF led a hundred people with disabilities or special needs and their family members to spend a very happy morning at KidsKiss Kingdom a few days ago.
Recalling our original dialogue with the person in charge of KidsKiss Kingdom which is a restaurant dedicated to families, it just still stuck on our minds...
That’s what we told him - “Children like Chloe really like to play facilities such as ball pit. However, due to their own ability or environmental factors, there is no way for them to play in public locations. Just because we know we are not being welcome …. and we just don’t like to affect others! "
He responded with sadness and expressed that everyone should have the right to be happy.
Not long he took the initiative to contact us and offered a free session for us to play and eat.
After the event, the participants were very happy and praised the KidsKiss Kingdom to be a great restaurant - surrounding is clean and bright, every corner is a photo attraction. Everyone working there is energetic and enthusiastic. Their caring and their concern of food safety requirements of the patients won the applause!

Angelman Walk, an annual event of HKASF, successfully host in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. At the same time, "One Click Care" officially kick-off with 200 guests and friends witnesses. "One Click Care" aims to improve the quality of life of Rare Disease and Disabled Families, and to enhance social inclusion.
Furthermore, another feature of Angelman Walk 2018 is that we put "Human Library" and named "Walk with Angel". After our matching, we put Normal Family and Patients' Family so that they can visit Disneyland altogether. The Patiences' family became a book, and Normal Family became reader. During the visiting, they both can have a sincere conversation including their life. We believe that we can also use a very gentle and relaxed way to promote social inclusion without discrimination and doubt.

The government’s recent proposal in the Budget to introduce the “Parents Trust for Special Needs” has indeed provided a hope for special needs families in Hong Kong. However, it is still in the consultation period and the operation and the minimum admission fee discussion are still believed to last for quite a long time. Facing this common issue we must actively participate and prepare for it.
It was the first time we accepted the participation of families other than the angels. Mutual sympathy and support appeared among us, everyone felt comfortable and the atmosphere was harmonious and warm.
Special thanks go to our HKASF Senior Consultant (Assistant Director of the former Social Welfare Department) Ms Ophelia CHAN, BBS, as well as legal advisor, Mr Dominic Hui for their speeches. They took the first lead in the services provided by the "Little Angel Resource Center" and their presentation and sharing of the topics were well received, giving us a precise understanding and awakening of the recent hot topic " Parents Trust for Special Needs ".
The seminar on that day was only a start and more to come. HKASF will continue to follow up on related issues and will explore more issues, services or products for the concerned sectors to provide more information and options for the families in need. We head for a service platform designed for people with disabilities or special needs and their families!

Indoor playhouse is a hit in Hong Kong, always crowded with people with long queues in weekends, and it definitely has become one of the best places for children to discharge their energy in recent years.
However, for families with disability or special needs, not just the price issue, the safety concerns that they cannot play with too many people at the same time make it seems almost impossible….
In the spirit of bringing the families into the community, “One Click Care” has been trying hard to move others that have hearts. Finally, we won attention from one of the largest wave pools in Hong Kong - Wellcome Paradise to provide special treats for us.
According to the person in charge of Wellcome Paradise, “Wellcome Paradise and Wellcome International Kindergarten are under the same organization. In view of the changes in family culture in Hong Kong in recent years, i.e. more concern on our children’s academic achievement, Wellcome Paradise provides a safe and diversified room for release and buffer of pressure under heavy school work. As an educational institution, we have always advocated “teaching without class” and the park should also advocate the spirit of “playing without class”. So when the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation submitted a cooperation proposal to the Paradise, we agreed to support this meaningful project fully without doubt! ”

This Saturday (14/4) "One Click Care" members have been provided with block booking, allowing us to play crazy for two hours. This event was co-ordinated by HKASF with Wellcome Paradise sponsoring the tickets. Participants did not need to pay any fees.

Following the invitation of the BlessVision Foundation to attend the "Tomorrow is Another Day" charity priority, we were again invited by the organization to attend the movie priority field and had the honour to share after the movie!
Chloe’s mother and parents of Linus shared the caring of little angels. Among the sharings, Chloe’s mother mentioned the recent news, and told us that she also had the idea of giving up lives with Chloe. At the times of great depression, she thought their leave would help the rest of the whole family to stay happy . Fortunately, she was enlightened by Chloe's father and was assured by him that the rest of their life without her and Chloe was not possible. She needed to be there together!
She got the sharp warning and rejuvenated. The whole family took Chloe to learn, form alliances, and help others. As a result, the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation was created. Chloe’s mother soon found out that she was not only helpful to others but indeed helping herself as well. We hope to continue to work with the little angels to form alliances with other families with need, extend helping spirit to others, and create and build up the "One Click Care" project!

Thanks to the invitation of the Shun Lee Catholic Secondary School, HKASF has the privilege of participating in a famine lunch held by the school. Pentecost Festival inspires and encourages the students to self-inflict and to have a spirit of considering others in their own place.
Nearly 700 teachers and students were touched by the cherub and typical wave hand action of small angel Chloe. Together with the introduction of the rare disease Angelman Syndrome by Andy and Joson in an easy way, the students were both curious and relaxed, and the atmosphere was extremely good.
Joson even encouraged students to pay more care to the people around them and not to look down on themselves. As long as one hold the heart to help himself and others, everyone can make contribution to the family and the society.
Thanks go to the teachers and students of the school for raising money for HKASF. We will continue to take our moves to affect the people around us and promote the spirit of "One Click Care".

It was a privilege to attend the BlessVision Foundation's charity priority and enjoyed the touching movie "Tomorrow is Another Day" that was really tugs at the heartstrings.
The story revolves around a family story of a moderately mentally retarded and severe autism patient. Most of the symptoms are similar to those of our little angels.
Still remembering the sharing by Dr. Wen, Wei-yao Sermon and his wife after the movie, calling for more care, appreciation and acceptance of the families in need to create a wonderful community.
On the occasion, we took the opportunity to share our stories with Dr. Wen, Ms. Mao and other guests, and explain the concept of "One Click Care", a platform for helping the disabled and people with special needs and their families.
May we work together with the same heart to build communion and create a new milestone!

Christmas times (Joy to the world) comes again...
However, the streets and restaurants are more crowded in festivals. And for restaurants the tables have to be handed back on time. For families with angels going out to eat for fun and having the Christmas dinner are indeed a difficult task. The concept of “Priority tables” is also born!
We all deserve to have joy. In order to give the angel families a chance to enjoy a happy holiday, the angel carnival is specially arranged for them.
Little Angel Christmas Carnival 2017and HKASF 2nd Annual General Meeting are scheduled to be held on December 24th. In particular, we would like to thank The Harbourview Hong Kong for the third consecutive year to provide the venue and food for the angel families.

We would like to create a one-stop online service platform (One Click Care, OCC) specially designed for people with disabilities or special needs and their families to provide services to over one million target people.
HKASF Committee has made great efforts for this project. Apart from constantly applying for funding from major foundations, we also sought opportunities from the business sectors for cooperation to reduce our operating costs and encourage the business community to fulfill their social responsibilities.
This time we are fortunate to have the collaboration of Celebrity Charity Fund Association Co. Ltd. on the joint charity auction with us. We have received more than 100 cases of brand-new world-famous branded fashion, shoes and accessories, plus the continued support of the knitting company. Friends from the show business added goods, and the two venues launched over 20,000 pieces of brand-new bazaars.
HKASF being one of the beneficiary institutions will ensure that all donations will be used properly. Taken from the community and got to be used in the community!

Rare Friends is an event organized by five like-minded young friends for the Second Jockey Club Glocal Hero Tournament held by Voltra. The objectives of this event is twofold: to promote social inclusion and harmony among the participants in order to enhance participants' awareness of Angelman Syndrome, thus strengthening the care of the public to Angelman Syndrome and their families for social inclusion; to promote “Priority tables” in OneClickCare program, thus making the public to be more aware of the upcoming big move by HKASF.
Recently five friends of "Rare Friends", took the initiative to contact HKASF and hope we can support and provide assistance to them. We are naturally pleased and after several in-depth communications and exchange of views, we finally decided to have the meaningful event take place at Hong Kong University on October 7 afternoon. More than 60 participants, including the five members of "Rare Friends", nearly 20 people in four families of angels, 20 volunteers from the University of Hong Kong and nearly 20 volunteers from the public. The Social Services Department of the University of Hong Kong supported Rare Friends by sending cabinet members to serve as team helpers and recruiters and financing venue leases and supplies for the event. With these enthusiastic college students contributing their efforts with hearts, the event was definitely a success.
The first part of the activity was conducted at a vegetarian restaurant in University of Hong Kong. This restaurant is also a restaurant that supports “Priority tables” of OneClickCare program. Starting from 2:30 p.m., after introducing the program, the process and various agencies, two rounds of "Live Library" activities were conducted. Each library includes an angel family and about eight participants. The angel family spoke first of how to get along with the angel. Then the participants asked questions / chatted with the patient's family for about 25 minutes. The chat aimed to raise participants' awareness of the disease. Along with the chat, everyone enjoyed the food provided by the restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxing and casual. At the close of the library, all participants were also given a heart card to write down blessings or encouraging words to angel families. Before leaving all gathered for a group photo.
The second part of the activity was moved to an open space in the student union hall of the University of Hong Kong for angelic painting. Using seven different colored paint colors, family and members of the angels were allowed to paint the canvas on {We are the Angels}. This activity was meaningful as you could that they participated passively initially to actively putting them in this simple interesting activity. The completed masterpiece would be kept by the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation.
The last part was to return to the vegetarian restaurant to take a promotional video for “Priority tables”. We again needed to appreciate the restaurant for lending out the venue. Thanks to the help of the five friends of "Rare Friends" for helping us to shoot.
Feelings after the event - Success of the activities of the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation requires both internal and external factors: emphasis should be placed on bringing together a group of angels and families to participate in the activities and on attracting other resources other than the Foundations, both in human resources or and financial resources. The foundation has more development.
The activity at the University of Hong Kong exerts a strong internal and external solidarity force, letting more people especially the young to learn more about the Angelman syndrome and the highly focused program – OneClickCare. HKASF is happy to work with young people, as evidenced by this co-organized activity with five friends from Rare Friends. Their dedication and serious attitude provide us confidence that if we promote rare diseases, their strength should not be underestimated.

Apart from promoting Angelman Syndrome regularly, HKASF also devotes itself to exploring and understanding new things through various activities or workshops so that little angels can enhance their knowledge.
Recently, a total of 25 people went to T Park [Source· Area], Hong Kong's newest and largest conservation education center.
T • Park is a unique, self-sufficient and integrated state-of-the-art facility for recreation, education and nature. In addition to the most cherubic spa treatments for the little angels, there is also an extremely informative tour guide and stunning sunset views. Everyone is amazed at the event!

HKASF was pleased to receive the invitation from Radio Television Hong Kong to attend the grand event「能者舞台非凡夜 2017」for the disabled sector. A group of angel families showed up for support. Other enjoying the wonderful performances of each performing unit, and noting that many people with disabilities still have their dreams insisted with fighting spirits, we were all moved and showed respect.

HKASF always tries every means and channels to gather more angel families for unity, mutual support and encouragement. We like to go out for family visits, thus learning and finding joy and resonance from each other.
HKASF has set a long-term goal for 2017, aiming to make a step forward to take more care of the community. With the perseverance and conviction, we work on the “One Click Care” (OCC) program. We have a strong belief that, besides caring the angels, with the assembly of social concern, we can spread out the love to the community. More people will understand and support other rare diseases and families of special needs, with the result that social communion can be achieved as ultimate goal.
A few days ago, a number of angel families dropped by the home of the Legislative Councilor Dr. Hon. Fernando Cheung Chiu Hung who has a 26 years old daughter Ying-ying suffering from a rare disease Mowat Wilson Syndrome (MWS). As a matter of fact, MWS and AS are quite alike, mental retardation belongs to moderate to serious sectors together with many symptoms in common. We chatted and exchanged frankly on the caring experience, and we definitely need to thank Fernando and his wife for the treasurable sharing and encouragement.

HKASF has recently received an invitation from Invasion Charity Foundation Limited (Hong Kong Government Registered Charity no.: 91/12807) to participate in a specially designed event for small angels. This Foundation was founded in 2013, which has a team of registered IN volunteer groups, leading volunteers to organize different charitable activities or large community services, so that the social vulnerable groups get more attention and care. It was hoped that through this event, besides letting the small angels and their families to have a fun, joyful, energetic afternoon, it served as a fundraising event for HKASF as well.

Joson, Founder of HKASF, was honored to be one of the officiating guests. Members of HKASF and Angelman families have showed up to support. Joson, as the father of an Angelman Syndrome daughter, shared his thoughts with the guests before watching the movie. Coinciding with the father in the film, both started from helpless when knowing that their children are sick to having no regrets with bravery, family love and support should certainly be able to bring all pain out of the haze and have the difficulties overcome.
"A Family Man" is a very meaningful film. Besides appreciating the invitation from the BlessVision Foundation, HKASF also hopes that in the near future there will be opportunities for mutual collaboration, using the use of media to care about not only the Angelman Syndrome patients but also patients with special needs and their families. We can work together to promote the social communion and practise more caring to the community.

June 9 this year is an important day for HKASF, which marks its 2nd anniversary. Special thanks to Hong Kong Ferris wheel for the full sponsorship and support, enabling us to take the angel families for free Ferris wheel ride in the Central seaside to enjoy the scenery on both sides of the harbor.
This is a new experience for many little angels. Although it is only a 20-minutes journey they were joyful and happy. Hong Kong Ferris Wheel, not only provided exquisite small gift packs for the small angels, but also specifically provided us special Belgian whaffles and drinks. We appreciate the carefully arranged and sincere hospitality from the Ferris Wheel and would like to express our sincere thanks.
This year HKASF specially selects "Ferris wheel" as the main celebration event, implying that HKASF, just like the Hong Kong Ferris wheel, is always ready to prepare for the angel families, not only accompanying with them to experience any high and low, but also enabling them to look wider at the world and enjoy the beautiful side of life.

Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation (HKASF) has been established for nearly two years. From the original solitary combat to today's union of friends, and with recognition and support by the major media and institutions of the community, Angelman syndrome is no longer a rare disease that nobody knows. Indeed, we need to appreciate the selfless love from all walks of life in the community. Of course, we should not be complacent as the road ahead is still long and difficult. It is a great honour to have the opportunity to co-organize with the Apple Daily Charity Foundation for this caring and charity event with more than 70 teachers and students. And it also kicked off the theme of caring community for HKASF this year. The Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation has been set up for nearly two years and has experienced countless tests and challenges. Reviewing more than 80 projects over the past two years a sea bead that has never been exposed was found.
On May, 2016, Joson Chan, HKASF Founder, was invited as a guest speaker in the Hong Kong Life Insurance Manager Association Management Seminar GAMA Convention 2016.
Being not fully prepared and needed to perform in front of more than 2,000 audience for 40 minutes, dead air, poor singing performance showing lack of experience on stage were indeed inevitable. To be honest, the performance was not that good and as there were editing and production problems afterwards the video clip was being put aside.

To take care of angels with moderate to severe disability are not easy. Sometimes we even need to face some moments asking ourselves if we are willing to expose our bad part to the public. The courage to accept, and to face may not change the results, but by putting aside the complaints and comparison, and adhering to the faith with good attitude, there are always reasons for us to strive hard and succeed.

It is always the sincere sharing that can move people, and we are grateful to the guests on that afternoon that give us great support and encouragement. A 40-minutes talk raised nearly $60,000 for HKASF.

Anson Hui, an 18-year-old pianist, won a number of international music awards. He was born with a rare disease, and coupled with learning difficulties, his starting line was full of obstacles. On May 13, Anson flied from Canada with his mother Koty to Hong Kong and performed a piano music sharing for us. After that there would be a sharing and interview session with the whole family.
HKASF is honored to be one of the supporting units, and got a great chance to feel his moving story and to get encouragement from each other!

HKASF, a charity organization for less than two years, provides care and support services to angels suffering from Angelman Syndrome and their families in a non-profit making way. These little angels have obstacles in speaking. HKASF, starting last year, began to develop an idea using the traditional communication board coupled with the tablet PC and application technology to build communication bridges among members of angelman families or caregivers. The whole plan needs a lot of money and we need the support from the community. Therefore, HKASF has been looking for opportunities to promote our ideas to the community, hoping to get support.

Lions Club of Shatin, Hong Kong has been actively promoting and supporting community service, and has maintained a good relationship and close contact with HKASF. Recently, it held a charity film fundraising in Times Square, and HKASF as one of the beneficiaries received a cheque for funding the project development.
We sincerely thank the members of Lions Club of Shatin, Hong Kong for their kindness and selflessness for the small angels. We also hope there will be more opportunities of cooperation with Lions Club of Shatin, Hong Kong to earn more social resources for the disadvantaged groups in Hong Kong.
HKASF has been established for more than a year to promote and support the families of Angelman Syndrome patients. But apart from that, we intend to pay much effort in caring the community as well. On last Saturday, HKASF with the Angelman families and volunteer team joined the St. Christopher's Home to sell flags to raise fund.

International Angelman Day 2017 Celebration Activity II - Disabled and Healthy Communion "Connect with Angels"
On 15/2, the big day of IAD, the angel families together with “Achievement Team” of China Life (overseas), a total of 85 persons, joyfully spent a whole day in Disneyland. With words still in the ears, we shall visit the Disneyland again with HKASF fans on 18/2.
HKASF sent a total of 100 tickets, accounting for more than 40 units or families to participate in this communion activity.

The International Angelman Day (IAD) is held every year on February 15. Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation (HKASF) will organize a disabled and healthy communion activity for angel families, partners, volunteer groups and friends of the Foundation.
HKASF, having started planning this year's IAD activity as early as six months ago, likes to offer new idea to lead the angel families into the community, with the public to celebrate the International Angel Syndrome Day with us. Happily, HKASF got the Hong Kong Disneyland's full support, sponsoring free park admission tickets. With support of China Life (Overseas) “Achievement Team”, the activity that emphasizes disabled and healthy communion "Achieves our angel hearts" comes to light and bound to be a success.

The Christmas carnival of HKASF 2016 was ended with the clatter and joyful laughter. The words are still fresh in the mind. Actually, it was also a special day for us ─ The 1st Annual General Meeting of Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation.(AGM of HKASF 2015-2016). Before the carnival, we had announced the 1st achievement since HKASF established.
We appreciate the preparation from our staff for these months. The AGM was accomplished successfully with the testimonies of more than 10 AS families and the representatives from the consultant mission. During the conference, we gave the account of our operating report of HKASF from June 2015 to September 2016, financial statements and the outlook for next year. We also collected opinions from quite a few AS families and the consultant mission and all the items on the agenda were adopted successfully with “zero objection”.
Regarding the operating report of HKASF from June 2015 to September 2016 and financial statements, after the verification of the certified auditor, it will be uploaded to our website for the public reference or consultation in the future.

During the year from 2015 to 2016, it was really a fruitful and fulfilling year for HKASF. Through the reports from different kinds of media, the awareness of the “Angelman Syndrome” was widespread to every corner which was unheard before. Now we gather 25 AS families comparing before we had only one family. During the year, we had over 50 family gatherings totally, big and small. More than that, we had total 16 training courses, workshops, and seminars to meet our goal which is to strive our best to support all the AS families.
As for the public, we held or assisted in holding, and participated different types of public seminars, speeches in the universities and the activities to promote the public awareness of Angelman Syndrome. We dwell upon with great relish that last May, we associated with Park Central holding the first Angelman Syndrome Exhibition in Hong Kong, the program lasted for 2 weeks, involving more than 100 volunteers. Besides, last June, the first fundraising event ─ Angelman Walk 2016 in Hong Kong Science and Technology Park raised the fund over HKD 300,000 for HKASF and more than 800 people joined the activity.
HKASF dedicate to providing the information about Angelman Syndrome all the time. We are allied with 45 AS organizations around the world. Through the fabulous website, the latest news release about AS is issued from time to time. Last year, our website was renewed up to 100 times. Furthermore, there are over 500 sharing and posts on our Facebook. Hence, we have over 2800 fans on our fan page within 1 year.
In the past year, HKASF led the little angels and the families to create many first-time experiences ─ first time to book a whole cinema to watch a movie, first time to support a new case successfully and first time to offer the prenatal testing for the close member of the AS family……etc. The courage to try, the positive spirit and attitude to discover lay a solid foundation for HKASF.
HKASF has countless projects, events, and renewal. However, we remain prudent to manage the budget. Since becoming one of the charitable institutions in Hong Kong January last year, we have stood firm to take on our social responsibilities. Besides, all the expenses are managed by the internal commission, there are consultant accountants to supervise the whole accounts to ensure all the funds are used properly. According to our financial statements last year, HKASF’s administrative expense only accounted for only 4.4% of the general income. Whereas the project of supporting the AS families and the expense to promote the public awareness of AS accounted for 18.2% and 18.6% respectively. One more thing is worth to mention, the reason why HKASF can maintain a healthy financial circumstance is all because the consultants, staff and volunteers’ unselfish sacrifice. They did not get any payment for all these!
To envision the future, HKASF will receive the consistent attitude, seize the opportunity to provide the support to the suitable AS families. One of the new challenges is to join the “Global Registry” for AS. We hope to build the AS data base of Hong Kong and Chinese to help the research in AS. HKASF also committed to bringing the AS families to integrate with the communities. We need to take more social responsibilities to give a hand to the sector of the disables and the social welfare in the coming year.
Regarding this, HKASF needs everyone’s continuous support and assistance. Especially for the staff, we are humble to invite the sages and committed volunteers to join us. No matter money, effort or time, donate whatever you can. Not only for the benefit of the AS family, but we also show our loving care and recognition for the patients with the rare disease and their families.
With jointed efforts, Little Angel Christmas Carnival 2016 finished with joy.
A total of twenty angel families, with more than 100 people this year, participated in the party. It is happy to have new angel families joined in. For the new ones, though it was the first time we meet, it just seemed that we have known each other for a long time. We laughed, chatted, exchanged caring experience, and most of all, we mutually encouraged each other with hearts.
It is especially treasury to learn that in Christmas time, the angel families chose to spend the evening with HKASF instead of staying with their own families alone. We are grateful to the hard work of the cabinet team, support of our honorary advisory team by appearing in person. This was touching and this big family is so full of love and caring.

Carnival started from 6 p.m. and ended happily at 10 p.m. with buffet dinner for everyone to enjoy. Different fun game put laughter non-stop. With Santa Claus sending gifts, the atmosphere maintained high. All makes the hard work of cabinet members for the Carnival to a perfect end.

As HKASF always pays much attention to disabled and healthy communion, we often encourage the angel families to participate in different types of activities in the community.
Recently, we have received an invitation from the Shatin Lions Clubs to participate in the 2-people 3 feet charity walk organized by Lions Clubs International District 303 - Hong Kong & Macao, China for raising fund for the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee and the Disabled Sports Association. HKASF for no doubt is willing to support this meaningful activity and it was glad that angel families supported by appearing in person. Together with other 15 families from special schools angel family participated in the 400-meter Fun walk. Though experiencing the inconvenience of physical action coordination, with the support from the crowd, angel family finished the walk with the learning to cooperate with each other with courage.

The most precious animation scenes will reproduce on the the ice stage, with the classic Disney Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck and Gao Fei, "the seabed Jones" protagonist Dolly, Mo Aberdeen and Marin, "Magic Snow" in the kingdom of Anna Princess Anna, Aisha Queen and lively and interesting white, the princess and seven cute dwarfs, basil light years with the Huddy, the lion king Simba, Ding Man and Peng Peng, "Aladdin" in the Aladdin, Jasmine princess and the wizard. Of course, the most popular Disney princess, all will appear to create the most exciting unforgettable fantasy world in sight.
HKASF autumn barbecue activity has more than 80 participants. Besides angel families, we also invited other groups to share the happiness of the gathering.
One of the JS team of Prudential Insurance Co., Ltd. called for a JS charity season activity with HKASF in July this year. More than 50 members of the team have been working together with us to promote Angelman Syndrome in the past three months. Other than caring about our angels, they helped to distribute pamphlets regarding Angelman Syndrome to their clients. The team is going to donate part of their income to HKASF for our future activities.
It is thus natural that we invited the Prudential JS team to this year's autumn barbecue gathering to thank for their love and kindness. It would be also a very meaningful disabled and healthy communion event. Special thanks to So sir who helped to provide the site and sponsored the fees for the barbecue. We all have great fun.

It has to be mentioned that we had several nursing students of The Open University as volunteer helpers for the activity on that day. Happy never ends, we had birthday celebration for September, October and November angels ....
In order to promote the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, HKASF participated in the performance of RTHK "World without wall V" one year ago. It is hard to believe that this wall-less can really get out from Hong Kong to the world.
As "The Psalms of the Angels" was nominated for the top ten list of the Lifelong Learning Category of the JAPAN PRIZE International Contest for Educational Media 2016, NHK Television Japan, we had the honor to be invited to visit NHK, participating in the final selection and attending the ceremony. Japan's local AS organization also came to bless and congratulate us, and we were invited to visit the local center of AS organization and meet with the Japanese AS families. We got an exclusive interview with NHK TV as well. All gave us grace with delight.
After rounds of competition, our "The Psalms of the Angels" eventually lost to the Canadian works "THE AMINA PROFILE". "THE AMINA PROFILE" even won the ultimate prize "The Grand Prix Japan Prize 2016" and it was definitely well deserved. HKASF sincerely sent heartful congratulation to the winner!
Moreover, we felt no disappointment or discouragement. We have been able to make into the final list of the NHK's "JAPAN PRIZE" was indeed commendable. The honor to stay for sharing and exchange, in addition to winning a lot of applause, sympathy, encouragement and blessings was well received!
We felt honored to be able to promote the angelman syndrome to different parts of the world, hoping to make everyone care more for patients with rare diseases. Japan support for us needed to be appreciated and we would send their regards to all angels and their families in Hong Kong. Let us try hard together!

Since its establishment, HKASF has been working with AS organizations all over the world to make alliance so as to exchange information, care about each other and learn. With" The Psalms of the Angels" as one of the finalists in NHK JAPAN PRIZE, Japan's angelman families all come to support and congratulate. The most valuable was that we could meet with a group of Japanese angels and their families. This made our exchange tour to Japan to a perfect end.
The most unexpected was that even though little angels came from countries with different culture and language, there were inexplicable wonderful cordial induction with just a look or a hug. The warmth and resonance go without saying!

“Everyone Has a Dream” - a familiar old song.
But it is hard to believe that a person has only one dream, and if the dream comes true it ought to be exciting. Angel families usually bring angels out to play, but staying overnight outside is relatively rare. Maybe even not for a single thought. As early as a few months ago, HKASF cabinet has been organizing a camp for small angels in fall. Holding firm belief with 100% sincerity and persistence, we do make it to come true!
Having it prepared for a long time, [Two days-one night Picnic Experience Camp] which was organized by HKASF with the Old Taio Police Station (Hotel) as sponsor, finally set off today. The idea of angels sleeping under one roof for one night was exciting. In addition to the delicious food, the “tourists” looked for the white dolphins and took a sight tour of the Old Taio Police Station (Hotel). Of course angel families won’t miss Ngong Ping Village and Ngong Ping Cable Car in such a rare Lantau Island trip. HKASF is thankful to Ngong Ping 360 Limited (the Company) for the Cable cars to visit the Buddha, making the trip to be even more substantial.
Again we proved that angel families have no fear and dare to try. Though some angel families did sleep outside their own houses for the first time, but with all the angel families together there was no scare, on the contrary just got fun and joy.

The final chapter in Summer ...
Due to lack of self-caring of Angelman syndrome patients, travel is not an easy thing for them. It is a wish of HKASF to have a long-term plan, i.e. taking the angel families out of Hong Kong to see the world – definitely a very good experience!
Dreams may not be a day to happen, but HKASF with a belief that everything is possible will gradually bring the little angels and their families to participate and explore more new things.

We led angel families, of twenty people, to attend a special session of the Virtual Reality (VR)《360° Dream Comes True - Travel Around the World》held at PopCorn mall just for HKASF. The virtual exposure to exciting activities like racing, parachuting, chasing sharks through the virtual reality panorama theater (VR Cave) made the audience feel like real. In addition, we went to the first floor VR Games area and played! Watching the little angels from the original frightened state to curiosity, and then started to try and laugh not only make the parents happy but also joined with the kids and had fun!
At the end we had our lunch with all the joys and laughs. As such, even the restaurant manager gave us a special discount. So great!
As HKASF, we fear no worries and always keep happy!

Although it is not easy to take angels down the street often, HKASF is committed to leading the small angels and their families into the community. Instead of escorting the angels by tour bus this time we chose to take the MTR to Tung Chung first and then took bus No. 11 into Tai O. It took fifty minutes by car!
The first stop – swimming cuttlefish into the brine cuttlefish
The first thing to do after arrival at Tai O was to have the stomach full for sure. We learnt from Sunday kiss, a magazine, that a small snack stall selling large cuttlefish is quite famous there. It is just next to the bus station of Tai O and we definitely won’t miss it. Sure enough, brine big cuttlefish tasted fantastic, and we learnt that it has to be a big cuttlefish that can taste that good. And we did not miss the tasty big fish balls too. Even Chloe could not stop eating, including the sweet sand white and icy pineapple!
The second stop – go out to the sea for huts in water and look for white dolphins
Taking a long journey to Tai O, there is no way not be take a boat to sea. So we took boats to look for hut shelters in water and search for the white dolphins. With only $20 one could take a ride in a speedboat tour. Although it was the hot summer in August, we just felt the cool breeze from the sea. Small angels felt happy and got excited as it was the first time that they were in a speedboat together. 趣怡BB was even well prepared to have a swimming blister in case she might need it. We did get lots of chance to watch white dolphins swimming freely in the sea. Not only the white ones we found, but we saw the pink ones too. We just wish that no matter what the colour of the dolphins are, they can live in that area in years to come and we look forward to visit them again soon!
The third stop - buy souvenirs + gold attractions
Buying big bottles of fresh and delicious shrimp sauce, "light taste" and “heavy taste” was a must. For the return trip we took the same route back to the city, and so nice we met cattle along the way!
That ended the seven hours of unforgettable Tai O tour, not tired till back to home! All the small angels wanted to watch the playback recorded during the journey, showing that they wish to get back again soon.
Indoor large jumping bed can be said to be one of the hot burst activities in recent years. However, our kids in HKASF cannot go for it for security reasons.
An inflatable bouncing carnival was held in Park Central this summer. Judy, Nicky and Rita of the Park Central have always shown caring and love for our angel families and they succeeded in fighting a private session for us. We had one hour to play, no limit to the number of people and number of times we played were also unlimited. It was grateful that the parents could play with small angels together with a group of enthusiastic volunteers to help.

Joy...
Always be the mark of the small angels! Regardless of how many hardships, as long as we saw the smiling face of angels, all the worries disappeared to nowhere!
HKASF summer activities, one after another, continued to taint others with joy in such hot summer.
We led more than a dozen angel families of 50 people to join the inflatable jumping bed carnival in Park Central few days ago. Thanks to Park Central for providing and sponsoring the special session so that we could had a safe, enjoyable and unforgettable experience.
The atmosphere was bustling with noise and all of us got so high. Thanks to the assistance of the enthusiastic volunteer helpers that made it fun but safe. After the exercise, we had all the angel families for an afternoon tea.
Thanks to the unity of angel families, we always received positive response from them if we are thinking of putting up gathering. There are 15 families to participate in last week's small angel birthday party. We can believe that those who could not show up must have strong urge to come.

“We Can! You Can!” of The Youth Development Work Scheme, organized by Junior Chamber International and Shan Power Association Limited, focused on the theme of caring of the disabled and committed to working together to build a barrier-free society.
It was a great honor to invite the Chairman of the Legislative Council, Mr. Jasper TSO, JP, Deputy Director of the Labor and Welfare Bureau, Mr. Siu Wai-keung, Chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr. CHAN Ching-ming, SBS, JP and outstanding youth, Mr. Li Chi Wai as officiating guests; a number of charity organizations are also invited to participate in the booth and perform in the music talent show. Even though our qualifications were shallow, lacking experience of organizing such a big event and with a lot of leakage and room for improvement, we were grateful to have zero accident and zero complaints in the event. In fact, it came out safely completed, showing that all the participants really cared about us and be so inclusive!
I would like to send sincere thanks to the star-grade masters of ceremony, officiating guests, propaganda ambassador, the sponsors, support team, HKASF cabinet, volunteers and staff members. The efforts that they put out could not fully be expressed on stage but we will bear deeply in our hearts.
The concept of HKASF organizing the AS Walk is to lead our small angels and their families bravely walk into the crowd, with social communion and sharing in mind. "Little Angels Love Mothers" & “Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Exhibition” kick-off event organized by the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation and Park Central was successfully finished with joy, warmth and touching moments yesterday, the Mother’s Day.
Once again, thanks to the hard work of the cabinet team, each one of them just did a fine job making the whole process went smoothly. We would also like to thank a group of volunteer helpers taking good care of the exhibition area. HKASF is grateful to fourteen angel families for their showing up to support. Their participation and commitment to HKASF laid a milestone!

Thanks to the interviews and reports by different media which let more people understand the Angelman Syndrome.
The exhibition was open from May 7 to May 20, for a period of two weeks. It was open to the public to visit, get more understanding and help to spread. No one would miss our love charity action: the exhibition area has a “take picture area” named as "I Promise to Care" with photo frame for the visitors to take pictures. After uploading the photos to the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation Facebook page, one can get a donation of HK $ 20 for each photo from G2000 to the Hong Kong Angelman Syndrome Foundation.
By acting to show support and recognition let us collect a total of 536 eligible photos. After counted and verified by accountant, HKASF received HK $ 10720 from G2000 and the fund would be used for HKASF routine use.
In addition, the fundraising box put in G2000 store of Park Central during the exhibition period raised HK$3030 for HKASF. Once again, HKASF would like to thank everyone of you for the generosity. We promise to use every cent wisely to serve the small angels and their families.

We are grateful and honored to be invited to become a beneficiary. To show our support, we held two sessions of sharing and the angel families showed up to cheer the participants in the Run. In the venue with our HKASF booth, angel parents and cabinet members distributed HKASF leaflets, introduced and explained the Angelman Syndrome to people. Some volunteers drew funny sketches on the hands and faces of the children that came to the booth. The children loved it and left with joy.

Celebrate International Angelman Syndrome Day - Movies Enjoy & Afternoon Tea Gathering for Lunar New Year
HKASF answered the International Angelman Syndrome Day by taking small angels and their families to a movie for the first time. It was also the first time to invite guests to participate. With the generous commitment and response the whole event came to a success with laughter and applause!
A total of 118 people participated. They came from the AS families, friends and relatives, HKASF consultants, the cabinet, volunteers and supporters, as well as guests from social welfare sector and disabled groups. We are grateful for their support as it started a new prelude on social inclusion for angel families.
HKASF will continue its efforts to take small angel families into the community through different activities and channels in the future. The participation and organization of more public events are useful to make people in the community more aware of Angelman Syndrome and to understand more about of rare genetic diseases.
